We finally were able to head to Florida to see the Space Shuttle launch. We ended up watching the launch in a Walgreens parking lot in Titusville,FL. The launch was very much anticipated by the huge crowd drawn. It was almost like Mardi Gras except for the complete lack of debauchery.
We had used our new Ford Freestyle to tote us along on this trip. This was great because we randomly ran into my sister in Anatasia State Park in St. Augustine. My sister, her husband, and their 2 kids along with my family packed our Freestyle up for an amazing day.
We got to the launch about 2 and 1/2 hours early. So we set up camp behind the car and started watching the Preview on NASA TV on the web. We ran my laptop and a box fan for a couple hours out of the back of our car. We used a Go Power 300 watt sine wave power inverter from OutsideSupply.com that became priceless. We drew a crowd around my little 15" laptop screen as everyone watched the clock tick down at an almost Southern pace.
We watched the laptop and were able to feel a part of the events unfolding about 12 miles from our location. It really helped having a view of the TV/Laptop running on the power inverter. It just made the experience an incredible one to remember.
Finally after a long wait we watched the amazing ball or trapezoid of fire dart upward at a crazy pace. It was amazing how quickly the Shuttle climbed. The whole process seemed to last only a few minutes before the external tank dropped and the Shuttle zoomed away.
